Description:ENGLISH: People from the Boa Esperança and Terra Preta villages goes fishing using the Timbo plant. A Trumai speaker talks about the fishing. There are also some conversations in this session: some in Trumai, some in Portuguese, some in other Xinguan languages (it is the usual scenario in this multilingual environment). The video shows various aspects of the fishing process: catching the fish, making fire, preparing them, eating them with manioc bread. ----- PORTUGUÊS: Moradores das aldeias Boa Esperança e Terra Preta vão pescar usando timbó. Uma falante de Trumai fala sobre a pescaria. Há também algumas conversas nesta sessão: algumas em Trumai, algumas em Português, algumas em outras línguas xinguanas (é uma situação comum neste ambiente de multilingüismo). O vídeo mostra vários aspectos do processo de pesca: pegando os peixes, fazendo fogo, preparando os peixes, comendo-os com beijus.
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
People from the Boa Esperança and Terra Preta villages goes fishing using the Timbo plant. There are also some conversations in this session.
The speakers talk in Trumai, Portuguese, or other Xinguan languages.
The conversation happens with people from the Boa Esperança and Terra Preta villages. Two speakers that often appear in the video are Speaker3 and Speaker12.
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
Speaker12 is a native speaker of Trumai. Both her parents were Trumai. She and her brother are the last descendents of the Awaldat group, a Trumai subdivision that used to speak a different dialect of the language. However, this dialect seems to have disappeared (Speaker12's way of speaking is similar to the way of speaking of the other Trumai individuals). Her late husband was Kayabi. She lives with her son and daughter-in-law and has several grandchildren. She is middle-aged (50 or more).
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
