The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
Elicitation of sentences in isolation, for the purpose of analyzing the grammar of the language.
The researcher asks questions in Portuguese. The consultant offers the data in Trumai.
There were three participants: the researcher (RG), the consultant (Speaker3), and another person (Speaker11), who was helping the consultant when she had difficulties with the questions in Portuguese.
Speaker3 is a native speaker of Trumai. She lives in the Terra Preta village, in the central area of the Xingu Reserve. Both her parents were Trumai. Speaker3 lived in the Kamayurá village for many years, when she was still married. Nowadays she is separated, living with her daughter and son. She is middle-aged.
Speaker11 is a native speaker of Trumai, but she is also fully bilingual in Portuguese. She has been living in the city of Canarana since 1997, because her father works there. Her mother is Trumai, her father is Suyá. Speaker11 has a little son.
Raquel is a Brazilian linguist. She has been working with the Trumai people since 1989. She has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University (Houston, Texas, U.S.A).
