Description:ENGLISH: Data obtained with a Trumai consultant, who was sometimes helped by her brother. The data consists of clauses describing the postures of a person, animal, or object in a particular kind of ground. For the elicitation, the researcher used real entities (a person, a dog, a chicken, a parrot) and objects (ball, potato, stick, a piece of rope, bottle, pan, glass, bowl, spoon, knife, a dress, a little of salt, water, broom, ring, scissors, shoes, necklace, plants). Sometimes drawings were also used (for the postures of turtles, snakes, toads, cockroaches).
The purpose of the project is to document Trumai, a genetically isolate language spoken in Brazil. The archive consists of a collection of texts in the language, plus other kinds of materials relative to the Trumai culture, such as photos, drawings, songs, educational materials, etc.
The researcher investigated how Trumai speakers describe postures. In Trumai, posture verbs are used not only for animate entities (human and animals), but for inanimate ones as well. However, the verbs used for a particular entity varies depending on the physical characteristics of the entity (i.e., its dimensions).
The examples are in the Trumai language. They are translated into Portuguese.
The data was provided by a native speaker of Trumai (Speaker3), who was sometimes helped by her brother (Speaker2).
