| Description: | Maria Tadeu, together with Maria José, who were both secluded as young girls, explain the procedures and belief systems revolving around the time of the “menina moça”, the first menstruation. Maria José (right) tells about her experience as “menina moça” (the coming of age of girl), about being secluded during her first menstruation, which is an important social practice in Aikanã tradition. Also the boys have to go through a ‘rite of passage’, which was recalled by her husband, Pe’i, in the same interview. Our DoBeS archive contains various narrations from elderly women that underwent “menina moça” puberty rites. A recent celebration demonstrating the cultural practices, songs and dances involved in this traditional seclusion was documented by Hein van der Voort. | |
