Description:The patauá (Oenocarpus bataua), hikurune, is a palm fruit commonly made into a drink by the Aikanã, by pounding it in a large, wooden mortar to rid the thin shell off the flesh. Afterwards, the pounded fruit flesh is strained with water into a container, thus separated from its large nuts, to make a cocoa-brown, thick oily juice. The nuts are often used in handicraft. The drink is referred to as hikurune‘mu in Aikanã.
